Happy Pi & Pie Days!

Okay technically Happy Pie Day was January 23rd AND yesterday was March 14th Happy Pi 3.14 Day. But, any day is a great time to celebrate PIE !

Pi is a VERY specific although unending number 3.14159265…! Pie can be a VERY wide ranging (perhaps unending) food! This is a comprehensive CNN article which outlines both the geographical histories and also the huge variety of ingredients possible. There could be 365 days of PIE.

DONUTS!

Always a Fun Food!

And there is often a debate around the best donut… Hot off the press is this Top 10 Donut List in Vancouver by The Georgia Straight. While there are a couple of key donuts missing ( Mello & Honey ), I mostly agree with the ranking and I now have 3 new locations to try in 2024.

And I may have to update the donut category in my Horizontal Eating Chart…!

All things onions!

Onions are Fun Food – either real onions or Funyuns!

This VERY comprehensive article by Forks Over Knives goes into helpful detail for 6 types of onions and includes interesting recipes! And they confirm that red onions make the best pickled onions that can go on just about anything – Fun Food or not. The quick pickle process is so easy that even I have managed to do it successfully! Here is a recipe that worked for me by one of my fave “recipeists” Beth at Budget Bytes.

Now, onion rings are an unofficial Horizontal Eating category for me. A&W make killer ones with a great coating and I want to try the ones at Sonic once I can make a road trip to the US. This Mash article gives a VERY comprehensive history on onion rings. And this Mash article ranks 15 Fast (Fun!) Food onion rings – I believe my beloved A&W Rings are undersold when placed at #12 BUT I have to agree that the ones at Culver’s were pretty good but #1… I’ll just have to go re-try them on a US Road Trip along with quite a few others on the list.

I may expand my unofficial category to Fried Veggies (not potatoes!) as I now also want to try these Sonic Deep Fried pickles.

Everything Bagel Ice Cream!?

Hhhuuummm, ice cream and everything bagels (actually ALL bagels) are Fun Food.  Fact

But Everything Bagel ice cream that includes cream cheese in the flavour profile seems…. different! And it may be Fun Food however opinions are split in this informative Pure Wow foodie article. If you order/find this brand, Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream, do a blind taste test at your next get together as Pure Wow did and be prepared for a range of answers – also have gum on hand as reports indicate a lasting garlic aftertaste…! Jeni’s has quite a few “funner” flavours – Skillet Cinnamon Roll or Strawberry Pretzel Pie or Texas Sheet Cake perhaps!

And for more ice cream news, Baskin-Robbins has created approximately 1,400 flavours since 1945. In it’s 77th year, along with a rebranding, they are creating 3 new flavours!  Thrillist has the details in this article and I am now looking for Totally Unwrapped which combines both chocolate and peanut butter ice cream and has fudge, fudge covered pretzels, caramel covered peanuts AND a salted caramel swirl!!

Hot Chocolate – a liquid Fun Food!

To be clear, you can drink OR eat Fun Foods!

** The best hot chocolate I’ve EVER had was so thick it was almost like drinking pudding! You can find it at Anna Cafe in Budapest and I’d return just to have it again – and pastries. **

With winter here, this timely PureWow article shares a hot chocolate taste test to help you find the best mix to make at home – and you can make it as thick as you like…!

Ginger cookies are Fun!

Fun! Tasty! Good with coffee OR tea! And the ginger makes them kinda good for you…!

I’ve always loved ginger cookies – whether they are crunchy or chewy. My current favourite can be bought at Willow Bakery Cafe! To quote the smiling baker when I praised his cookies & proclaimed them the best –

” I know ”

Buy just 1 cookie or a pre-packed 6 – I recommend the 6 – and see if you agree with me & the baker!

Plain potato chips, the real hero

Potato chips are high on the list of favourite Fun Foods, VERY high. No debate.

AND also a delivery mechanism for other Fun Foods – a range of dips from the straight forward chip dip to hummus to tapenade to guacamole to …!

AND an international Fun Food in many flavours. Many many many many flavours.

Maybe I am getting jaded but the more flavours I try, the more I love simple plain potato chips. My past horizontal taste testing was focused on new & exciting flavours from all over the world – recent fave is mayo flavoured chips from Panama! However my new focus is PLAIN, kettle cooked vs. ripple vs. “regular”. Miss Vickie’s is my go to brand that I will now have to break away from…

Interestingly enough, Miss Vickie’s has side stepped the word “plain” by calling my current favourite Original Recipe. And Miss Vickie’s also offers wine pairings for 13 of their 14 flavours which is also very clever marketing! And do keep your eyes open for their Party size bags.
